Hospital permitted to start residency courses

Special Correspondent

PONDICHERRY: Health Minister E. Valsaraj said on Thursday that the government general hospital here was being renamed Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Post-graduate Institute.

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has permitted the hospital to train 66 doctors holding PG degrees or PG diplomas for the three-year senior residency.

Mr. Valsaraj told reporters that the introduction of the senior residency system added to the training that the general and maternity hospitals now offered doctors to develop their qualifications.

The doctors taking the senior residency course would be paid a monthly stipend of Rs. 16,000 each and could choose courses in 23 departments.

Staff nurses

The Minister said 105 posts of staff nurses had been created at the headquarters hospital and in the institutions on the outskirts of the Union Territory.

A kidney transplant unit would be started soon at the general hospital and an inspection team from the Union Health Ministry had already assessed the facilities to start the unit.

The Minister said the government run medical college would be open for admissions next year.
