Banyan to launch sensitisation programme for police

CHENNAI: The Banyan, a home for destitute women, is involving itself in spreading awareness as part of its mental health week activities.

Mental Health Day falls on October 10 and the theme is `Mental and Physical Health Across the Life Span.' The Banyan is now in the process of introducing a police training programme, which will be launched on October 8 at the Police Commissioner's office.

Dial 100, a mental health helpline, is a joint project of the NGO, the city police and the Institute of Mental Health to rescue wandering persons with mental illness and provide them shelter and care. The training aims to sensitise nearly 350 city police and railway police personnel.

The NGO has already conducted awareness programmes to make school students aware of mental illness, methods of treatment and stigmas attached to mental illness. The first workshop was held at Olcott Memorial School in Adyar on September 22. Along with Theatre Lab, a professional theatre group, Banyan has also started street theatre workshops. More street plays will be brought to various parts of Chennai soon.

The organisation is also mobilising college students to come up with Mental Health Day awareness posters and hoardings.
