Relax bar rules, say hoteliers

Drinking age may be lowered from 21 to 18, suggests industry

CHENNAI: Should those above 18 and below 21 be allowed to drink? Should pubs shut down by midnight?

The hotel industry has called for amendments to the regulations imposed on pubs and nightclubs by the City Police Act.

"Amendments need to be made, we are looking into that," M.P. Purushothaman, president of the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Association of India and South India Hotels and Restaurants Association, told The Hindu on Wednesday.

"Those above 18 could be allowed to drink," he said, when asked if the industry was happy with the police regulation that only those above 21 should be allowed to drink.

The deadlines for nightclubs could be extended keeping in mind the interests of the hospitality industry, with the growth of business process outsourcing and information technology in the city.

"We are taking it up with the government. The deadlines can be relaxed," Mr. Purushothaman said.
