THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The newly-installed Mayor C. Jayan Babu today highlighted the need for a perspective plan that will equip the capital city to handle the pressures of urban life for the next 20 years. Addressing a Meet- the- Press programme organised by the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club, Mr.Babu said the acute space crunch in the city called for horizontal expansion and development of infrastructural facilities in the suburban areas. Outlining the priorities before the newly-elected council, he promised to curb corruption and step up garbage disposal. He assured the city residents that every effort would be made to resolve the problems dogging the garbage plant at Vilappilsala. He said the Corporation would work in tandem with the Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority to spur the development of the city. Mr. Babu said he would carry out surprise checks at the zonal offices to identify corrupt officials and resolve the problems facing the public. He also pledged to carry out periodic inspections to streamline the garbage collection system. The Mayor said the development of parking facilities would be given top priority. He also promised to promote farming in the suburban areas and enforce curbs on wetland reclamation.
