AGP revives alliance with ASDC

The Tarun Gogoi-led Government has failed, say their leaders

GUWAHATI: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Friday revived its alliance with the Autnomous State Demand Committee (ASDC). They reached an understanding to work for an anti-Congress alliance in the May 2006 Assembly elections.

AGP president Brindaban Goswami and ASDC president Holiram Terang said the alliance would not be confined to electoral politics. They would maintain party-to-party coordination for upholding the socio-political and socio-economic rights of indigenous people of Assam.

In a joint statement, they alleged that the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress Government had failed on all fronts. Mr. Terang, a senior Karbi leader, accused the Government of failing to protect the common man in the hill districts of Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills.

Referring to the recent killing of 11 persons by masked miscreants, Mr. Terang said secret killers were on the prowl in the two hill districts to foment ethnic conflict. The ASDC severed ties with the AGP in 2001 after the latter, under the leadership of the former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, forged an alliance with the BJP for the May 2001 Assembly polls
