NEDUMBASSERY: A Border Security Force (BSF) unit will be set up in Kerala with a view to enabling Malayalis serving the force to enjoy a stint of three to four years of home posting, said the Director-General of BSF R.S. Mooshahary here on Friday. The new unit with facilities for training will be a battalion. The unit will be made operational within a year once a decision is taken regarding the land for the unit, he told presspersons at the Cochin International Airport in Nedumbassery on Friday airport before his scheduled visit to the land identified for the proposed unit. Ninety-eight acres of land spread over two villages near the airport has been identified for the purpose. He said that there was no dearth of funds for the project and that the financial aspects depended on the kind of development activity required on the chosen land. He said 9,500 Malayalis were serving the BSF, which had a collective work force of more than two lakhs. He said the Malayalis with the BSF were working in remote places on the Indo-Pak and Indo-Bangladesh borders, Jammu and Kashmir, the deserts of Rajasthan, Ran of Kutch in Gujarat and Sunderbans. They never get an opportunity for home posting. ``We have come across many cases in which they are forced to resign job owing to domestic problems,'' he said. He said he had spoken to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy about deploying a battalion in the State considering the welfare of the Malayalis in the BSF. Setting up of the new unit will give Malayalis an opportunity to enjoy three to four years of home posting, he said. Mr. Mooshahary is also entrusted with the responsibility of conducting interviews throughout the country for recruiting medical officers for the various central police forces including the BSF, the Central Reserve Police Force, Central Industrial Security Force, etc. He said that he was planning to complete the process within the next two months. The first in this chain of interviews will be held at the FACT headquarters here on October 10 and 11. Approximately 40 to 45 applications have been received from the State. The requirement for the entire country is 240 officers, he said. Mr. Mooshahary said he had submitted a proposal to the Centre for establishing women component in the BSF.
