HYDERABAD: Top seed Krishnan Sasikiran suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of 2004 World junior championship bronze medallist Jun Zhao in the second round of the fifth Asian individual chess championship here on Friday. Meanwhile, WGM Koneru Humpy rediscovered her winning ways with a fluent 58-move win against IM Roktim Bandopadhyaya. Humpy was shocked by Himanshu Sharma in the first round on Thursday night. IM Lanka Ravi registered his second straight win, outwitting GM Wenjin Wu. But it was disappointing day for the other Indians GM Dibyendu Barua and WGM Dronavalli Harika. While Barua lost to GM Thien Hai Dao, Harika was held to a draw by the lesser-known J. Ramakrishna. Sasikiran confessed that he played a bad game in Slav Defence. For the 19-year-old Jun Zhao, it was a memorable outing as he shocked the experienced Indian. Zhao said once he played g4 in the 14th move, the Indian was on the defensive. After that the Chinese ensured a tight grip on the board forcing Sasikiran to resign in the 43rd move.
Ravi impressive
Lanka Ravi, fresh from his victory over fourth-seeded GM Murtas Kazhagaleyev in the first round, continued his impressive showing against Wenjin Wu. The smiles were back in Humpy's face as she outwitted Roktim Bandopadhyay in Bogo-Indian Defence. Roktim was a pawn down after he faltered with his a6. The f4 break proved to be crucial for the Vijayawada girl as she forced a rook ending and Roktim had to resign after 58 moves. Important results: Jun Zhao (2) bt K.
