Land resource inventory taken up

C. Jaishankar

Micro-level survey to be completed before March 2006

SIVAGANGAT: SIVAGANGAT: he State Government has undertaken a pilot project of land resource inventory in Sivaganga block of the district, with the collaboration of National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning, Bangalore, and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore.

Under the maiden programme, initiated under Rashtriya Sam Vikas Yojana, a team of soil survey experts of the Agriculture Department would visit each and every village in Sivaganga panchyat union and take up detailed survey of the soil. The team would study depth of soil, its colour, texture, structure, consistency, reaction, concretions, gravel, calcareousness and other characters.

J. Janakiraman, Agriculture Officer, Soil Survey, said the team would dig at least five pits up to five feet in each revenue village and study the soil pattern with necessary parameters. It would note down characteristics of the soil in a systematic way. TNAU would analyse the soil samples.

The Collector, Anand Patil, told The Hindu that the team would survey all 42,000 hectares of the block and the collected data would be brought under geographical information system. The survey would give 100 accurate and clear pictures of land and soil pattern in all 50 revenue villages of the block. Findings would be sent to the government, policy-makers, Agriculture Department and other stakeholders.

The database would be immensely useful to farmers to select the suitable crop. The State as well as district-level agricultural officers could suggest suitable crop after seeing the profile of each village.

The micro-level survey would be completed before March 2006, he added.
