TAMBARAM: Residents of Chromepet New Colony undertook a signature campaign in an effort to mobilise support for their demand of introducing of direct services to different parts of the city. Members of the New Colony Residents Welfare Association collected signatures from more than 1,000 commuters who regularly boarded buses of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation at Chromepet towards the High Court, Koyambedu and T. Nagar. Led by V. Santhanam, president of the association, the members said that at least a few thousand people boarded buses from Chromepet. And during peak hours, all the buses originating from Guduvanchery, Vandalur Zoo and Tambaram are full, making it virtually impossible for people in Chromepet to board the buses. The suburban electric trains were no different, the residents said, stressing the need for at least a few direct or cut services towards Koyambedu, T. Nagar and the High Court. In the absence of direct services, women and children were the most affected, they said. They would meet MTC officials and submit the signatures and place their demands, the residents said.
