This is a movie that screams safe from every frame. There is no pushing of any envelopes - visually or ideologically. And since it is a safe film, families can safely embrace it.

Directed by one of the directors of Antz, Madagascar tells the tale of Marty the zebra who lives in Central Park zoo in New York but dreams of being free. His friend is Alex the lion who is perfectly happy in the zoo and looks forward to field trips as it is a chance for him to show off.

When Marty decides to run away, and Alex, Melman, the neurotic giraffe and Gloria, the smart hippo, go in search of him, they are rounded up and sent off to be rehabilitated in Kenya. Mutinous penguins (they are the best part of the film), however, hijack the ship and the four land up in the wild in Madagascar. After this the plot loses steam. Which is as well as the film is meant for children and cartoon characters do not usually eat one another up.
