Shankar rewrites second record

MYSORE: Shankar Dikshith set his second meet record in the Dasara Games winning the 800m run for men in better time than his own earlier record. Shankar clocked 1:56.37 for the half mile which was almost a second faster than his previous record.

In the swimming events held at the University pool, Chetan Sharma and Smitha Lakshman both from Bangalore City notched up doubles. Chetan and Smitha Lakshman were also part of the men's wnd women's 4x100 winning relay squads to get their third gold medals in the meet.

There was the usual controversy of two associations claiming to be the genuine ones in the body building event.

The highlight of the second day was the half marathon in which Anju Bobby George and Reeth Abraham ran a short distance.

The marathon was won by Erappa D. Akki of Madras Regimental Centre in the men's section and Preethi Rao of Mumbai in the women's section. Both winners received Rs. 20,000 as prize money.

Women: Preethi J. Rao (Mumbai) 1hr:29m.59s.

Women: 800m: H.S. Manjula (Mys) 2:28.31; 200m: Susheela Siddhi (Belgaum) 25.96; Shot Put: Lolakshi Rao (Blr C) 10.70; High Jump: K.C. Chandana (Mys) 1.58m.

Swimming: Men: 400 m Freestyle: G.J. Chetan Sharma (Blr C) 4:43.00; 200m breaststroke: Padmaraj Pednekar (Bel) 2:53.99; 100m backstroke: Skanda Aswath (Blr C) 1:10.39; 100m butterfly: Krishna Kumar (Blr C)1:06.52; 200m freestyle: Chetan Sharma 2;13.78; 4x100m relay: Bangalore City (Skanda Aswath, Hemanth Kumar, Chetan Sharma and S. Prajwal) 4:35.33.

Women: 400m freestyle: Smitha Lakshman (Blr C) 5:06.99; 200m breaststroke: Shraddha Alva (Blr C) 3:08.14; 100m backstroke: G. Meghana Gupta (Blr C) 1:17.07; 100m butterfly: Shrujana (Blr C) 1:14.77; 200m freestyle: Smitha Lakshman 2:25.38; 4X100 relay: Bangalore City (Sanjitha Basavanal, Smitha Lakshman, Shrujana Lakshman & L. Ashwini) 5:02.99.
