Imagination takes over at science exhibition

Staff Reporter

DINDIGUL: Exhibitions can be effectively used to bring out the talents and imagination of students and to kindle their creative skills. The science exhibition organised by St. Joseph's Girls Higher Secondary School in Dindgul on Friday set up a platform to test the innovative thoughts of budding scientists and to display their skills.

Equal importance was given to science and technology and social activities. Special emphasis was laid on effective communication.

Most of the science students had given top priority to health and nutrition and nutritious food for patients and chemical residue-free food for all. The 30 varieties of juices, using greens, vegetables, fruits and roots, prepared by 30 students of the Home Science Department was the star attraction. The students also prepared and displayed traditional rural food varieties using cereals. A team prepared hot `pakkoras' made of wheat and served them to the visitors. A mixture of fruits was another nutritious food served to the visitors at the exhibition.

Literary attractions

While a group of students gave top priority to effective communication in English, another group brought the Sangam Age before the visitors' eyes. Students enacted out samples of `Iyal, Isai and Natakam' (literature, music and drama), the three forms of Tamil Literature.

With Goddess Saraswathi playing the veena, Tamil poet Avvaiyar displayed her poetic skills while the legendary Kannagi displayed her eloquence.

The marketing skills of R. Iswarya, a Plus Two student-turned-street vendor, who sold herbal products successfully at the exhibition attracted everyone present. Magic lights, injection needle destroyers, automatic signals for road and rail traffic were models that expressed the creative and enterprising skills of the students. Vegetable carvings by the biology students showed their craft skills and imagination. Mathematics students captivated visitors with their fun-filled calculations and mind teasers.

The students displayed more than 200 models on recent developments in science, mathematics, social science, chemistry and physics.

The District Educational Officer, A. Shanmugavadivu, inaugurated the exhibition, which was arranged by the school principal, Inbajothi, and the vice-principal, Jayarani.
