Only a fifth of those who graduate are employable: VC

Staff Reporter

Says varsity was trying to place more emphasis on research

CHENNAI: : ``Only a fifth of the 75,000 students who pass out of our colleges each year are employable,'' Anna University Vice-Chancellor D. Viswanathan said while inaugurating a symposium `Reactions '05'at St. Peter's Engineering College, Avadi.

He appreciated the efforts taken to organise the symposium for the benefit of students. He also expressed appreciation over the strict enforcement of the dress code and the `ban' on cellphones on the campus.

Mr. Viswanathan said Anna University was trying to place more emphasis on research and that the industry was not spending enough on it.

He said the Japanese industries spent about 20 per cent of their annual budget on research.

He asked all institutions to contribute for developing the research and development centre at Anna University. He said it was time to look at development research and creative young minds should focus on achieving President Kalam's vision of making India a developed country by 2020.
