Rajendra Prasad is over the moon

Staff Reporter

`Anand' team makes a big impact; Jonnalagadda's `Deeksha' gets Best Children's Film award

BEST COMEDIAN: Dharmavarapu

BEST DIRECTOR: Shekar Kammula

HYDERABAD: Film star Rajendra Prasad is over the moon. Having bagged the Nandi award for the Best Actor in a leading role for the movie "Aa... Naluguru," he has been swamped with congratulatory messages from the time the awards were announced here on Sunday.

"Every one was expecting this award, especially Telugu viewers who have made the movie such a big hit. I am thrilled. The fact that I got the award for the second time in a gap of 15 years shows my longevity as an artiste," he said.

Turning philosophical the actor, who is better known for his comedy roles, said "significant achievements" depend on the kind of opportunities that come calling as it has happened to him.

Life in character

"As soon as Chandra Siddhartha, director, narrated the script, I accepted it because the character touched everyone with so much of life in it," he observed. Interestingly, Prasad has won the Best Actor in a leading role for the second time and both for serious roles. "That's true. I feel the same as I had felt when I won the award for `Erramandaram.' I have won six Nandi awards thus far. Maybe I would have won more if my comedy roles too were taken seriously by the jury," he reasoned.

"I am always trying to convince people to accept that it is as much tough to do comic roles as serious characters," he laughed. Prasad promises his fans to do more roles that will appeal to both the class and mass sections in the coming days. And more "healthy comedies" too. The `Anand' team — Shekar Kammula, who got the best director award, and his heroine Kamalinee Mukherjee — is upbeat.

They are shooting for `Godavari' at a location 90 minutes away from Rajahmundry.

Twenty-five-year-old Bengali beauty Kamalinee screamed with joy on the phone. She thanked Telugu filmgoers for accepting her with just one film.

Shekar Kammula said: "Thank God. The film that I had dedicated to my parents also turned out to good for the jury. It probably shows that Telugu movies are on the right track."

Other important award winners are: Best Supporting Actor Shashank (`Sye'), Best Supporting Actress Satya Krishnan (`Anand'), Best Comedian Dharmavarupu Subrahmanyam (`Yagnam'), Best Villain Pradeep Singh Rahot (`Sye'), Best Screenplay Sukumar (`Arya'), Best Cinematographer Chota K. Naidu (`Anji').

Vidyasagar's beat

Best Music Director Vidyasagar (`Swarabhishekam'), Best Art Director Thota Tharani (`Arjun'), Best Male Playback Singer Sri Sagar (`Arya'), Best Female Playback Singer Chitra (`Varsham'), Best Choreographer Prabhu Deva (`Varsham').

In the category of children's films, `Deeksha' directed by Siva Jonnalagadda was awarded the Best Children's Film. `Swetha Seventh A' directed by N.N. Srinivas was the Second Best Film award selected in this category.
