NEW DELHI:
Music promoter Harold Leventhal, who presented Bob Dylan to the world and introduced sitar maestro Ravi Shankar to American audiences, died in New York last week. He was 86. Leventhal was stationed in India during World War-II while serving in the Army Signal Corps.
Recalling Leventhal's life, Editor of Mainstream, Sumit Chakravarty, told The Hindu : "He was in close touch with progressive intellectuals in India and had known them from his stay here in the Forties. He organised Pete Seeger's visits to India and personally knew (former West Bengal Chief Minister) Jyoti Basu, (filmmaker) Satyajit Ray and (journalist) Nikhil Chakravarty."
