Setback to CPI(M)-CPI relations in Alappuzha

Staff Reporter

Row over circular regarding vote for CPI nominees

ALAPPUZHA: Relations between the CPI(M) and the CPI, the two major partners in the LDF, in Alappuzha district appear to have suffered a setback over the issue of a circular brought out allegedly by Cherthala area committee secretary of the CPI (M) A.M. Aarif.

The photostat copy of the alleged circular signed by Mr. Aarif , which was circulated among the CPI (M) area committees in Cherthala the day before the local body elections, urged CPI(M) workers not to vote for CPI candidates, as there were indications that the CPI workers would not cast their vote for CPI (M) candidates.

However, CPI (M) district secretary G. Sudhakaran later issued a statement that the CPI (M) had nothing to do with the circular and that some persons who were intent on destroying Left unity were behind it. Mr. Sudhakaran's statement added that the CPI (M) would try to ensure the victory of all the CPI candidates.

However, the issue did not end there. It was again raked up after the elections. Mr. Sudhakaran again issued a statement that the circular was fake Mr. Aarif had nothing to do with it. Mr. Sudhakaran pointed out that the CPI district secretary, who had received a photostat copy of the circular on the day

before the local body election and subsequently faxed it to the CPM district committee office, had not been able to produce the original circular.

But CPI district secretary, T. Purushothaman, in a statement issued on Monday (October 10), said the CPI (M) secretary G Sudhakaran was trying

to brush aside the issue. Though Mr. Sudhakaran had promised to publicise the names of those who were behind the circular, he had not done it even 17 days after the elections. He accused Mr. Sudhakaran of trying to protect the persons responsible for the circular.
