Celebrating 40 years of a movie classic

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even after 40 years, `Chemmeen' holds a special charm for film lovers. The movie, based on Thakazhi Siva Sankara Pillai's novel of the same name, was made in 1965. It was one of the earliest colour films made in cinemascope in Malayalam. The film was directed by Ramu Kariat. `Chemmeen' won the President's gold medal for the best movie in 1965.

The film's resounding success was attributed to the talented personalities who worked on the project. Its hit songs were penned by Vayalar Rama Varma. Salil Chaudhary was the music director. The dialogues were scripted by S.L. Puram Sadanandan and cinematography was by Marcus Bartley. The still photographs were taken by Sivan and the movie was edited by Hrishikesh Mukherji.

The movie was also a confluence of acting talent of the highest order in Malayalam at that time. Satyan, Madhu, Kottarakkara Sreedharan Nair, Sheela, Adoor Bhavani, S.P. Pillai and Adoor Pankajam were part of the cast.

The songs for the movie were sung by Sahib Chawdhary, Manna Dey, K.J. Jesudas, A.P. Udayabhanu, P. Leela and Santa P. Nair.

The Amateur Cultures Trivandrum (ACT), a cultural organisation, will celebrate 40 years of `Chemmeen' from October 30 to November 5 in the city. On October 30, a seminar on the subject `Malayalam cinema before and after `Chemmeen'' will be held at Kalabhavan.

On November 5, those behind the film will be honoured. Veteran actors Madhu, Sheela, Adoor Bhavani and Adoor Pankajam are scheduled to attend the function.

The function will be followed by a musical tribute to Vayalar Rama Varma and Salil Chaudhary. P. Leela, Udayabhanu, Santha P. Nair and Latha Raju are expected to be present.
