Somnath for concerted action against terrorism

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Tuesday made out a strong case against war and armed conflict while addressing a British Parliamentary delegation, now on a visit to India. Stating that both must be avoided, he called for concerted action to deal with many problems, particularly terrorism.

At a banquet he hosted for the delegation, the Speaker said: "To us there can be no substitute to friendship and goodwill. Alternative to peace is war or armed conflict which every country should avoid. Happiness and prosperity of each country and of its people can be achieved by mutual cooperation and mutual respect and that will help usher in durable peace and development.''

Also, according to Mr. Chatterjee, a new dimension would be added to India's relations with the Commonwealth following the election of West Bengal Speaker Hasim Abdul Halim as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
