CHENNAI: A. Anusuya of North Chennai went missing when the tsunami hit the Tamil Nadu coast on December 26 last. On Wednesday, her skeletal remains were found under a boat in the Royapuram fishing harbour. Small solace for the mother of the eight-year-old. According to the police, the child was playing when the tsunami struck. Later, her parents Arumugam and Sumathi filed a complaint stating that their daughter was missing. Arumugam died of a fall sometime ago. On Wednesday, Murugesan, a fisherman, went to the Fishing Harbour to perform puja to his damaged boat. When he tried to lift it, he saw a skull and informed the Fishing Harbour police.
The boat was removed and the skeletal remains were dug out. When the news of the discovery spread to the nearby fishing hamlet, a large crowd, including the girl's mother, gathered at the site. A white skirt and a blue-coloured metal bangle were found near the remains, which enabled Ms. Sumathi to identify her daughter. Speaking to this reporter, she recalled that the child was playing in the harbour area when the tsunami hit the coast. "We could not trace her all this while."
Remains handed over
to mother
The remains were removed to the Stanley Medical College Hospital and later handed over to the mother. The woman had three sons, the police added.
