HYDERABAD: The State Government has constituted a committee of Ministers to oversee arrangements for celebrating the 80th birthday of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, says Finance Minister K. Rosaiah. At a function organised by devotees at the Sri Sathya Sai Nigamagamam here on Tuesday, Mr. Rosaiah, who is the sub-committee chairman, said the members included J. Geeta Reddy (Tourism), N. Raghuveera Reddy (Agriculture) and J.C. Diwakar Reddy (Panchayati Raj). He said at a time when spiritual values were on the wane, Sri Sathya Sai Baba had done yeoman service to society. Apart from rendering quality medicare to the poor, he had also engineered a project to supply safe drinking water to villages in the fluoride and drought-affected parts of Anantapur district, he said. Mr. Rosaiah said some of those things which Sri Sathya Sai Baba had achieved, even the Government was unable to. Referring to criticism from certain quarters, he said that one needed to look at the discipline that Sri Sai Baba had been able to inculcate to the future citizens of India through his education institutions. Quoting the Bhagavad Gita, Governor Sushilkumar Shinde said the Lord declared that whenever there was a decline in `dharma', He would take `avatar' for saving mankind from evil. On Sri Sathya Sai Baba's 80th birthday, the best way people could show their devotion was to understand his teachings and his message and follow them in daily life. Others present at the celebrations included Mr. Raghuveera Reddy. Chairman Sri Sathya Sai Nigamagamam Justice Y.V. Anjaneyulu introduced the devotees to the day's programme. It was followed by devotional music by Nitya Santoshini.
