Training centre for rural NGOs

Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: The Confederation of Non-governmental Organisations in Rural India (CNRI), a conglomeration of rural NGOs, would start a training centre to provide capacity building exercises to its members, the co-chairman of CNRI, L.V. Saptarishi, said.

Addressing presspersons recently, he called upon the NGOs to take full advantage of the training, which he said was intended at making them technically proficient in their field of activity. Urging the non-governmental agencies to increase their manpower, he said the CNRI would function as a link between NGOs and government agencies, helping deserving voluntary agencies procure projects and funding. NGOs with at least a year's record of work in rural areas could become part of the confederation, he said.

The state president of the CNRI, K. Bhanu, said the confederation had a state-wide membership of 220 NGOs working in rural areas in different parts of the State. The CNRI would be instrumental in identifying funding sources in India and abroad. At least 193 such sources have already been identified. Proficient NGOs would be recommended to funding agencies, he said.

He also announced a regional conference of the NGOs to be held in the coming months in Madurai, Coimbatore and Villupuram. A seller-buyer meet for self-help group (SHG) projects would be organised as part of this initiative to aid SHGs in marketing their products. The members would be initiated into the idea of `concept selling' through the various training programmes.
