Rain continues in Tiruchi district

Special Correspondent

Signal of onset of northeast monsoon

TIRUCHI: Several parts of the district received good rainfall for the second consecutive day on Wednesday signalling the onset of the northeast monsoon.

The overnight rain continued well into the morning on Wednesday in the city. The sky remained overcast throughout the day, bringing down the daytime temperature sharply.

On Tuesday, some parts of the district received moderate to heavy showers with Devimangalam recording a maximum of 175 mm during the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday. Samayapuram, on the outskirts of the city, too received a good rainfall and recorded 93.7 mm. The district recorded an average of 32.9 mm during the period.

The following were the chief amounts of rainfall received in other parts of the district during the same period (in mm): Nandiyar Thalaippu - 77, Lalgudi - 72, Pullampadi - 59.8, Sirugudi - 57, Vathalai - 18.8, Tiruchi city - 16.8, Musiri 16.5 and Tiruchi airport - 12.7.

Cheer to farmers

The rain has also brought cheer to the farming community in the district. It was considered beneficial for the samba cultivation, which has just begun.

However, the downpour left many of the city roads battered, most of which were already in a bad condition after being dug up for the laying of underground drainage pipes, sending a wake up call to the civic authorities. Many roads, especially around the Chathiram bus stand, parts of Thillai Nagar and Woraiyur, remained slushy. Water logging in the Melapudur underpass continues to remain a problem. The underpass turned unmotorable on a couple of occasions over the past two days after three to four feet of water stagnated there.
