Mar Gregorios to be enthroned Bishop

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Gabriel Mar Gregorios will be enthroned as Metropolitan of the Thiruvananthapuram diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church at a special ceremony at St. George's Orthodox Cathedral, Palayam, on Sunday.

The ceremony, to be held at 2 p.m., has two major themes - enthronement of the bishop and acceptance of the faithful.

The new bishop, seated on the throne, will be raised amid chants that `he is worthy' by the faithful three times.

Mar Gabriel, 56, had been consecrated as bishop on March 5 and appointed as bishop of the diocese on June 24 this year.

A graduate in English literature from the University of Kerala, he secured a Master's in theology from Catholic University in Paris and a Doctorate in Theology from Serampore University in 1992. A member of the faculty at the Orthodox Theological Seminary in Kottayam, Mar Gregorios is a member of the Church's dialogue team that interacts with sister Churches.

Silver jubilee

The enthronement ceremony on Sunday also coincides with the culmination of the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the formation of the Thiruvananthapuram diocese of the Church.

A meeting will be organised at the University Senate Hall at 3 p.m. in this connection.

The meeting will be chaired by the Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan Baselius Mar Thoma Mathews II.

Assembly Speaker Therambil Ramakrishnan will inaugurate the proceedings.

Corporation Mayor Jayan Babu will inaugurate the women's rehabilitation centre set up by the diocese.
