Strike to protest against "custodial killing" in Thoubal district

Correspondent

IMPHAL: Normal life was affected in Thoubal district and movement of vehicles in Manipur disrupted on Thursday, when a general strike was observed to protest against the "custodial killing" of a carpenter on Tuesday morning. The 24-hour protest began at midnight on Wednesday night.

The police say the deceased, Laishram Indramani, (25), was a ranking member of the People's Liberation Army, military wing of the Revolutionary People's Party. During interrogation he volunteered to take the police to a place in Thoubal district, where weapons were stashed away. But, the police claimed, he opened fire at them and was killed when they retaliated. The police say they have recovered two AK 56 rifles with 36 rounds of ammunition and incriminating material.

Representatives of people met Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh demanding that the police commandos responsible for the killing of an "innocent man" be punished, but the talks were not fruitful.
