This Day That Age
The Congress Working Committee, meeting in New Delhi on October 13, discussed the States Reorganisation Commission's report. The general opinion of the members seems to be that since the recommendations have been made by a high-power commission, they should be generally accepted except for some minor adjustments if necessary. In those cases where there was mutual agreement between two States, it could be considered. The CWC will adopt a resolution indicating its general approach to the report after its discussions. Prime Minister Nehru, Pandit Pant and Maulana Azad, who participated in the discussions, were of the view that the recommendations should be considered dispassionately. The Commission had submitted its recommendations after studying all aspects of the question and it was essential that the report should be treated with respect. Mr. Nehru did not give any indication of how and when the reorganised States would come into being. He said decisions on the various recommendations would be taken only after the report had been fully considered by the AICC, the PCCs, the Chief Ministers, the State Legislatures and finally Parliament.
