MANGALORE: The State unit of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) has stepped up its campaign against landlords. Claiming responsibility for the "symbolic attack" on the property of Gurudutt Chatra at Hallihole in Udupi district recently, Bhaskar, a party functionary in a press release here on Thursday said their fight is against the social system of landlords and not against individuals. The press release, posted in Mangalore and delivered to media offices here, said their fight is also against injustice, exploitation and atrocities being perpetuated by landlords against agricultural labourers. "When we say landlords, it is not our endeavour to rob them of their property and give it to people," the release said. Demanding that landlords stop the exploitation of labourers, the Maoists also instructed landlords to surrender excessive landholdings. The Maoists warned landlords that any amount of protection they may receive from either the police or the government machinery may not be true protection. "If you continue to exploit labourers using official machinery to your advantage, it will prove counter-productive. Instead, try to live in harmony by taking care of the interests of all concerned," the press release issued here said.
