KARAIKAL: The Karaikal Struggle Group will hold a series of agitation in New Delhi in December, including a demonstration before Parliament, in support of its demand for separate union territory status to Karaikal. The decision was taken at the Group's general body meeting held here on Wednesday under the chairmanship of V.A. Kanniah Thevar, freedom fighter. S.P. Selvashanmugham, convener, told The Hindu that a separate union territory status for Karaikal became necessary as the region did not see any major development or improvement in the last four decades due to the step-motherly treatment of the Pondicherry Government. The KSG would press the Centre to direct the Pondicherry Government to conduct local body elections along with the Assembly polls. They would meet UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, the Home Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and leaders of all political parties and seek their support, he said. A.S. Ansari Babu, a founder-member of KSG, V.S. Nallusamy, secretary of Kottucherry Commune Consumers Forum, Pavalar A. Packirisamy, Kurumbagaram M. Kunjithapatham, Singaravelu Pillai and A.M.K. Balu, commune conveners of KSG, Shahul Hameed, auditor, Thanga Devadoss, district secretary of the National Communist Party spoke.
