CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Thursday urged the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission to select efficient persons with a humanitarian outlook for Government jobs. Laying the foundation for the expansion of TNPSC's annexe building at a function here to mark the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Commission, she cautioned against the danger of employees who efficiently ran the Government machinery adopting a mechanical approach in the course of time. Ms. Jayalalithaa commended the TNPSC's spotless and exemplary role during the last 75 years in shaping, strengthening and developing the Government apparatus. In Parliamentary democracy, the Commission had an important place as it had to choose the right candidates who, as part of the civil service, would implement Acts and schemes along with the political executives. The Government, during the last four years, had given the State various schemes. The administration had tried to provide relief to every section of society, she said. Ms. Jayalalithaa said she believed that the goal of good governance was to provide a transparent and efficient administration. Her Government strived to fully utilise the Government machinery and the employees to ensure that the benefits of the schemes reached the people in time. In order to avoid delay in recruitment of personnel by providing promotions, the Government, in 1994, had set up department-wise panels to effect promotions on the basis of the TNPSC's recommendations, she said. These panels had been removing the backlog. The Government had earmarked Rs.1.09 crores for constructing the TNPSC annexe building in 1994. It has sanctioned Rs. 2.81 crores for its expansion now, she said.Ms. Jayalalithaa released the platinum jubilee souvenir of the TNPSC. Commission chairperson Yasmin Ahmed, who received the souvenir's first copy, thanked the Chief Minister for earmarking the funds for the TNPSC infrastructure. The Commission had been told to recruit ministerial staff for the police and judicial departments, besides selecting medical officers, veterinarians, typists and village administrative officers, she said.
