Residents alarmed over water levels in reservoir

Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE: The rise in the water level at the Peruvannamuzhi reservoir in Koilandi taluk has created alarm among the families staying in the vicinity of the dam.

As many as 53-odd families stay in the periphery, and the rise in the water level is a usual phenomenon during the monsoon season.

As many as five families have been evacuated and accommodated in the vacant quarters built for the reservoir engineers. According to local sources as many as 13 families are in danger. The water level according to them was 45 metres high while the authorities claimed that it was only 43.26 metres, it was alleged.

It was also alleged that though the matter has been brought to the notice of the district authorities no steps were initiated to relocate the people here.

When contacted, the Tahsildhar Bharati said the rise in the waterlevel at the reservoir was an annual phenomenon. "Last year too the water had risen. The question is whether the families in the vicinity of the dam are the de facto owners of the land where they have put up sheds. "A resurvey is being undertaken in Chakkitampara panchayat . When the survey of the Kanthalad panchayat in the vicinity of the dam is also undertaken, we will get a correct picture."
