When music brought joy to their hearts

Staff Reporter

Music recitals at three Government hospitals bring solace to patients

KOZHIKODE: That music can bond humans however poles apart they may be in their different avocations in life was experienced during the Navaratri season.

The three music recitals organised by the Swati Tirunal Kalakendram Trust, Thiruvannur, at Government hospitals in Kozhikode in connection with the nine-day Navaratri festival on October 10,11 and 12 were events to remember in every way, say those who were present at the programmes. Many of the patients took time off to forget their pain and trauma. For some of them, it was a moment of extreme relaxation and solace.

Some wept, overcome by the sheer joy of being entertained by noted musicians.

Others just fell asleep listening to the mellifluous notes that engulfed the hospital premises.

The response was spontaneous and the hospital halls were filled to capacity.

Kaithaprom Damodaran Nambudiri, noted lyricist and managing trustee of Swati Tirunal Kalakendram said this was the first time that the programme was conducted in Kozhikode.

"A similar programme was conducted at the Regional Cancer Centre at Thiruvananthapuram for the first time. Since 2003, we have been conducting the music recitals at private hospitals too.

Now, I conduct these programmes only in Government hospitals.

The programme has been conducted in hospitals in Kasaragod and Kannur. The response from the patients has been more than rewarding.

"This initiative comes from the heart. There is no monetary or other benefit. It is a great experience to remember," he added.

Public Works Minister M.K.Muneer was among those who attended the programme and was touched by the humanitarian gesture.

The programme was held at the Medical College Hospital, Beach Hospital and the Mental Health Centre, Kuthiravattom.
