LUCKNOW: In a bid to encourage farmers for marketing their produce and improve quality for enabling them to compete in the international market, Uttar Pradesh Mandi Parishad (UPMP) would provide farm training. UPMP Director Rajnish Dubey said on Thursday that it has been decided initially the training of export trade would be given to potatoes, mangoes and flowers growers. "The aim of the on farm training is to encourage the mangoes, potatoes and flower farmers and make their products of export quality," he said. Mr. Dubey said despite their being an increasing demand for mangoes grown in the state in the international market, the farmers of the State have to depend on the exporters of Delhi and Mumbai. "This dependence on the Delhi and Mumbai exporters always created marketing problems on the farmers of the State,'' he said. This training would be provided for three years so that the famous Nawab brand mangoes' could compete with the best in the international market, Mr. Dubey said. Mr. Dubey said expert help would be sought from various agriculture universities, including the well-known Govind Ballabh Pant Agriculture University in Nainital. Similarly, he said there was a market for six million tonnes of potatoes in the State but its share in the export market was meagre'. A major portion of the profit from the export of potatoes to Sri Lanka and other Gulf countries was grabbed by the middlemen based in Mumbai and Chennai, he said. "Some progressive potato growers made an effort to export their produce directly to these countries but they had to suffer losses owing to lack of agents," Mr. Dubey said. Keeping in view this problem it has been decided to form a marketing society of potatoes growers selected from Farrukhabad, Meerut and Agra, he said. -- PTI
