ALAPPUZHA: Fiji Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase today visited the public sector coir factory Foam Mattings (India) Ltd. here and studied the functioning of the factory. Mr. Qarase was accompanied by a 60-member entourage that included ministers of the Fiji Government, high-ranking officials and top businessmen from Fiji. Mr. Qarase who was impressed by the range of products manufactured by the factory later gave orders for coir products worth around Rs. 10 lakhs. The Foam Mattings managing director D. Ramarajan said Mr. Qarase directly gave orders. He added that the Fiji Government had agreed to buy more coir products and the present order was the first one. Mr. Qarase arrived at around 12.20 p.m. at the factory and was received by the Minister for Tourism K. C. Venugopal, the chairman of the foam mattings P. Pushparajan, director of the company A. A. Shukkoor and District Collector K. R. Muraleedharan. Mr. Qarase visited the factory and inspected the looms. He evinced special interest in the coir geo-textiles being produced there. Later he visited the gallery of the factory where the coir mats and mattings were being exhibited. Officials made a presentation about the coir industry and the functioning of the factory before Mr. Qarase and his entourage. Mr. Venugopal presented Mr. Qarase a model of a snake boat. The Fiji ministers and the Fiji High Commissioner to the country Luke Rokovada were also presented with mementos.
