NEW DELHI: Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Vardhan on Thursday said the Delhi Government should take additional water from the Haryana Government to end the severe water scarcity here in the Capital. Dr. Vardhan said Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was wrong in saying that water supply in Delhi would not be affected by stoppage of flow to Delhi from Uttar Pradesh due to desilting work in the Upper Ganga Canal. Noting that the supply of water from the canal had been stopped from October 11 and would not be resumed till Diwali on November 1, Dr. Vardhan said this has meant that Delhi would not be receiving about 40 per cent of its total supply during the festive season. The BJP leader charged that despite the stoppage of supply leading to a major water crisis in the Capital, the Chief Minister has not made any alternate arrangements. This when, she was aware that Uttar Pradesh would be stopping the supply. Dr. Vardhan said as a result of poor planning, severe water crisis has gripped dozens of areas in New Delhi, South Delhi and East Delhi. In most of the colonies in these areas, water was being supplied at very low pressure, he claimed.
