Of aspiring aviators

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Do you believe you have what it takes to achieve what may be a childhood dream: becoming a fighter pilot?

For nearly 300 young men and women, the question was to be answered at the Indian Air Force Station in Hebbal on Thursday.

Despite rain, which forced "auditions" to be mostly conducted indoors, there were enough thrills and spills. And all was taken in the right spirit.

National Geographic Channel's "Mission Udan" was part of the its new positioning, but the initiative was novel enough to capture the imagination of many. The ultimate prize is a month with an Air Force unit and a chance to fly a supersonic aircraft.

There was a larger turnout in Bangalore than at the earlier events in Delhi and Mumbai, according to Ramon Chibb, vice-president (programme and production), who said the aspirants were an enthusiastic group. They were more knowledgeable about aviation compared with their counterparts in other cities.
