PMGSY: officials pulled up for lapses

Staff Reporter

Action sought against Panchayat Raj engineers

  • No scientific procedure followed in selecting villages under the PMGSY
  • Discrimination alleged in allocation of funds for constituencies under various schemes
  • Officials accused of manipulating proposals

NALGONDA: Irrespective of party affiliations, district MLAs on Thursday took serious objection to lapses in selecting villages under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana at the meeting of the vigilance and monitoring committee of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA).

Tungaturthy MLA R. Damodar Reddy of the Congress alleged that the villages selected at the district level following the guidelines were being unceremoniously changed at the State level. "Who is to be blamed for this? Panchayat Raj engineers who are manipulating with the proposals must be punished," he demanded.

    Works cancelled

The Miryalaguda MLA, J.Ranga Reddy, of the CPI (M) too said that no scientific procedure was being followed in selecting the villages under the PMGSY. "Why didn't they select our villages? Aren't our villagers paying taxes?" he questioned alleging that works in some village were cancelled later for unknown reasons.

The Rajya Sabha member, Akarapu Sudarshan, observed that monitoring committee "should not be deceived like this". The Nalgonda MP, Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, who chaired the meeting, said that he would bring the issue to the notice of the Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary. Panchayat Raj Superintending Engineer Nandakumara Chary came under fire by people's representatives for the "serious lapse." Mr. Damodar Reddy further alleged that there was discrimination in allocating funds for the constituencies under various schemes. During the review of rural water supply scheme, he said: "How can we achieve comprehensive development, if there is parity in the allocation of funds." Apart from the MLAs— V.Purushottam Reddy (Ramannapet), N.Narasimhaiah (Nakrekal), K.Nagesh (Alair), P.Venkat Reddy (Munugode), V.Venkaiah (Suryapet) and R.Ravindra Kumar (Devarakonda), ZP Chairperson Keeta Laxmamma, Collector K.Vijayanand, Joint Collector, B. Sridhar and the project Director, DRDA, Sunita Bhagwat also took part in the review meeting.
