PMK slams platinum jubilee fete of "defunct" Commission

Special Correspondent

"Jobless youth want the ban on appointments lifted"

CHENNAI: Pattali Makkal Katchi leader, S. Ramadoss, has criticised Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for organising the platinum jubilee celebration of the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission which, he alleged, has been made defunct by the State Government.

In a statement here on Thursday, Dr. Ramadoss said Ms. Jayalalithaa, after coming to power in 2001, banned appointments in government departments under the guise of austerity measures, making the commission "jobless."

Though she withdrew various measures announced by her immediately after the AIADMK's rout in the Lok Sabha elections, she had not lifted the ban on appointments. A whopping 2 lakh posts were vacant and even vacancies arising out of superannuation were not being filled, he said.

Unemployed youth were hoping that the Chief Minister would lift the ban on the occasion of the platinum jubilee of the Commission.

But Ms. Jayalalithaa disappointed them by not lifting the ban, the statement added.
