`Corruption has hit healthcare services'

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The Lokayukta N. Venkatachala said here on Thursday that he had seen for himself that in rural areas how primary health centres could not provide the much-needed healthcare services because of many reasons, including corruption. The primary health centres in other States too may not be much better.

Inaugurating the 38th biennial conference on the Christian Medical Association of India, Mr. Venkatachala said when healthcare for the poor was not coming to the full extent from the Government, it was a blessing that non-governmental health organisations such as the Christian Medical Association of India (CMAI) were taking care of the healthcare needs of the poor with love and compassion.

Referring to the conference theme, "Sharing the Abundance of Life", Mr. Venkatachala requested healthcare professionals and hospital administrators to find ways of making the rich share their abundance with the poor, not out of compulsion but out of love.

President of the CMAI C.S. Walter, General Secretary, Vijay Aruldas, and Rev S. Jeyapaul David were among those who addressed the inaugural session.
