Campaign throws light on sight

Many affix their signatures on a banner as a token of having had some useful tips

TIRUCHI: Hundreds of men and women who happened to listen for a while an awareness campaign on `Sign up for Sight' near the K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital here on Thursday, volunteered to affix their signatures on a banner as a token of having had some useful tips through the programme.

The campaign forms part of the `World Sight Day,' observed on the second Thursday of October every year, and was sponsored jointly by the Tiruchi District Blindness Control Society and the Tamil Nadu Government Opthalmic Assistants Association.

Speaking on the occasion, the Dean (in-charge) of the K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College, Nagarajan, explained the importance of early treatment for curing vision ailments.

The General Secretary of the Association, M. Veerasamy, said awareness programmes were designed according to age group of listeners.

The impact of diabetes in complicating vision problems was explained. While those aged above 40 years were advised to go in for a clinical check-up for early detection of diabetes, those afflicted with the ailment were advised to go for periodical check-up for eye ailments.

The Joint-Director of Health and Rural Services, A. Vasudevan, inaugurated the awareness campaign.

NCC cadets from Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School, Puthur, and members of the Association from Karur and Tiruchi districts launched the campaign and obtained the signatures on the banner.
