NEW DELHI: A head constable of the Delhi police was suspended after he allegedly chose to publicly protest against a senior officer's decision to punish him for dereliction of duty at the police headquarters here on Thursday. According to the police, Head Constable Avdhesh, posted with the Police Control Room (North Zone), decided to stage a "dharna" at the PHQ after he was handed out the punishment of "no work, no pay" by the Additional Commissioner of Police (PCR). His mode of protest also caught the attention of some camera crews who recorded his statement. In the meantime, the Station House Officer of the I.P. Estate police reached the PHQ and informed an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), posted with the PCR, about the episode. The ACP then took Avdhesh to the Joint Commissioner of Police (Communications), Aditya Arya, who suspended him with immediate effect. The Delhi police spokesperson said Avdhesh had remained absent from duty for several days in the past without any proper explanation. He had also been dismissed in 1992 when he was posted at Jehangirpuri police station. However, following an appeal, he was reinstated by the then Additional Commissioner of Police (Northern Range) with three years of service deducted from his career record. In the present case too, Avdhesh had the option of appealing before the Joint Commissioner to get his punishment cancelled. However, he chose to go public which was a breach of discipline, the spokesperson said.
