IMPARTING KNOWLEDGE: Charles Prince, Chief Executive Officer, Citigroup Inc., along with Ela Bhatt, Chairperson, Indian School of Microfinance for Women, inaugurating Citigroup Centre for Financial Literacy in Mumbai on Friday.
MUMBAI: Charles Prince, Chief Executive Officer, Citigroup Inc, on his first visit to India, on Friday dedicated to the Indian School of Microfinance for Women (ISMW) the Citigroup Centre for Financial Literacy. The Ahmedabad-based ISMW is the world's first educational institutional to focus solely on the discipline of microfinance. The school is a partnership between microfinance pioneers, SEWA Bank, Friends of Women's World Banking and Coady International Institute, a Canadian organisation specialising in sustainable community development.
Rs. 15 cr. grant
The ISMW was made possible by a Rs. 15-crore grant from the Citigroup Foundation in 2004. The Citigroup Centre for Financial Literacy will provide training for both CEOs of grassroots microfinance institutions and industry practitioners in financial education, needs assessment, curriculum development, campaign execution and evaluation. "We support this important new institution and the Centre that will not only make financial services more accessible to the poor, but help them preserve and manage the few resources they have. Citigroup has long been a partner to the microfinance industry in India and around the world as we share its belief in bringing about better lives for low-income families and stronger local economies," said Mr. Prince.
