Vayalar award for Sachidanandan

Staff Reporter

`Sakshyangal' wins maximum points

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: K. Sachidanandan, poet and secretary of Kendra Sahitya Akademi, has won this year's Vayalar Literary Award for his collection of poems `Sakshyangal.'

The award, now in its 29th year, was announced at a press conference here on Friday by chairman of the Vayalar Rama Varma Memorial Trust M.K. Sanu. It was a three-member judging committee comprising the former bureaucrat T.N. Jayachandran, lecturer of Malayalam at St. Albert's College Sebastian K. Antony and Head of Department of Malayalam, University of Kerala, D. Benjamin that unanimously selected this book from among the three short listed by the trust.

"Both Vayalar and Sachidanandan remind us of the existing conditions of human life in their own inimitable ways," Mr. Sanu said after announcing the award. Mr. Sadchidanandan was told about the award only after the announcement was made at the press conference. The award has a cash component of Rs.25,000, a statuette designed by sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman and a citation. It will be presented at a ceremony to be organised at the Tagore Hall here on October 27.

"In `Sakshyangal' the poet reacts to the present-day human condition with unconditional humanism," said Prof. Benjamin. "The poet is able to change his language and construction in keeping with changes in time. The poet's reactions are not mere sloganeering but the ability to imbibe the changes that have taken place in human life," Sebastian Antony said. Trust member and former Vayalar award winner O.N.V. Kurup while explaining the nature of the award said: "The award is not for Sachidanandan who wrote `Sakshyangal' but for `Sakshyangal' written by Sachidanandan."

The works that are considered for this award are books— in any branch of literature— written in Malayalam and published during the five years immediately preceding the year of the award.
