HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy flagged off relief material worth Rs.47 lakhs on Friday for distribution to earthquake victims in Jammu & Kashmir. The State Government had earlier released Rs.2 crores for relief work, but following a request from Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Ghulam Nabi Azad, it airlifted 361 tents collected from the Police Department.
IAF special flight
Mr. Azad's request followed widespread destruction in Kashmir that had rendered several thousands of people homeless, the Chief Minister explained to the media persons at the airport after flagging off the relief material by a special Indian Air Force flight. The IAF is operating a special cargo flight to Srinagar free of cost. The relief material will be flown to Srinagar from where it will be despatched by road to Baramullah and Uri districts. Dr. Reddy said the Union Minister had sought supply of tents to shelter the people. The State Government mobilised the tents from the Andhra Pradesh Special Police (APSP). The cost would be met from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. He said the calamity was bigger than apprehended and hence, needed immediate help. He asked people to come forward to help them liberally. Director General of Police Swaranjit Sen and Commissioner of Disaster Management Shashank Goel were present.
