Sundara Ramaswamy dead

CHENNAI: Sundara Ramaswamy, a renowned Tamil writer and influential essayist, died in the United States in the early hours of Saturday. He was 74. His body would be brought to Tamil Nadu in the next four or five days, according to a release issued by Aravindan, Editor, Kaalachuvadu.

Born in 1931 in Nagercoil, he studied Malayalam, English and Sanskrit in school. His first literary work was in 1951 when he translated into Tamil, the novel ``Thottiyin Magan.''

He penned three novels, about 150 essays and 65 short stories. He wrote 108 poems under the pseudonym Pasuviah. Besides being a creative writer and critic for the past 55 years, he started Kaalachuvadu, a magazine, in 1988. He had translated novels, stories and poems from English and Malayalam into Tamil. His ``Oru Puliyamaraththin Kathai'' had been translated into English, Hindi, Malayalam and also Hebrew. Twenty-six of his short stories were translated into English.

He received the Kumaran Asan Memorial Award for Poetry, Iyal Award presented by the Centre for South Asian Studies, University of Toronto and the Tamil Literary garden of Canada and Katha Chudamani Award from Katha, New Delhi.
