Directors elected unanimously in 16 cooperative societies in district

Special Correspondent

Election for Koniki society postponed due to floods

  • Congress likely to bag majority of the societies
  • Local leaders hold talks with the Congress for unanimous election

ONGOLE: All the directors were elected unanimously in as many as 16 out of total 76 cooperative societies which are going to the polls in the first phase in Prakasam district.

In the remaining 60 societies, there are 780 director posts (13 directors in each society). While 172 directors were elected unanimously in these societies, there is contest for the remaining 608 director posts.

Interestingly, local leaders of both the Congress-I and TDP preferred compromise to contest in the cooperative elections as vindicated by the unanimous election of as many as 380 out of total 988 directors (nearly 26 per cent). They shared the director posts on the basis of their perceived strength. Congress is likely to bag majority of the societies.

    TDP creates scene

Though the senior TDP leaders had created a scene on the other day over delay in release of voter lists in Gummallampadu society, local leaders are holding negotiations with the Congress to pave the way for unanimous election. There is a feeling that the scales are tilted heavily in favour of the ruling party in cooperative elections.

Meanwhile, district Collector B. Udaya Lakshmi postponed the election for Koniki society in Inkollu mandal and Gonasapudi in Chinnaganjam mandal from first phase to second phase due to floods.

As the villagers found it difficult to reach the headquarters to file their nominations on October 14 due to swollen rivulets, the Collector ordered postponement of election. People can file their nominations in these societies on October 18 and elections would be held on October 26. Those who have filed their nominations on October 18 would remain valid.
