CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government on Saturday announced that employees and workers of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board who retired between December 1, 2000 and November 30, 2002 will get enhanced pension. This followed a representation for increased pension by the retired persons. Thus the increase in pension along with the dearness allowance will be a minimum of Rs.300 and a maximum of Rs.1000 per month. The decision will benefit 8,676 retired employees and workers. Their pension arrears will also be paid in cash. Besides this, they would get an additional substantial amount by way of surrendered leave and gratuity, the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, said in a press release. The move would result in an additional expenditure of Rs.12 crores this year and an annual expenditure of Rs.6.50 crores for the board. Except two unions, the other nine trade unions signed the new wage accord on Saturday. Condemning the accord a "betrayal of the board employees and contract labourers by the government and the board", members belonging to the CITU-COTEE staged a demonstration in front of the board headquarters on Saturday.
