At ease with the easel

Special Correspondent

CELEBRATING AN ART: M. Girija with one of her Mysore style paintings.

MYSORE: She is a rare artist who is at ease with different schools and style, be it the traditional Mysore style, the Tanjore style or the Ganjifa miniature painting technique.

M. Girija of Mysore is reckoned to be a virtuoso in both the Mysore style and the Tanjore style. She has perfected the Mysore style under various experts but did not allow their influence to suppress her unique style. On the contrary, Ms. Girija has developed her own style and this is evident in her innovative designs. Her works are characterised by benevolent faces that depict devotion or the "bhakti bhava".

The Mysore style of painting is reckoned to have originated in 1525 A.D. and matured during the reign of Krishnaraja Wadiyar III in the 19th Century. The art form has had many ups and downs until it was revived by a group of young artists of Mysore.

Characterised by the intricate use of colour and fine relief work, the procedure comprises the basic "gesso" work and the use of traditional colours and thin gold foil to embellish the artwork. Some of the more popular subjects depicted in the Mysore style include deities drawn from the Hindu pantheon and themes culled out from various mythologies.

Apart from having exhibited her work in Mysore, Ms. Girija's paintings have been exhibited at the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat, Bangalore, in Singapore, New Jersey, and New York.
