Children participate enthusiastically in long-distance roller-skating race

THANJAVUR: Fifty students from various schools participated in a long-distance, 60 km to be exact, roller-skating race from Thanjavur to Tiruchi on Sunday.

G. Naga Pillai, managing director, Pillai and Sons Motor Company, flagged off the race from Vedham Automobiles on Medical College Road.

M. Manoharan, coach, said that such a long distance skating rally was being organised for the first time in the State.

The students were divided into batches of various age groups. A first, second and third prize would be given to winners of each group. School students between six and 15 years participated in the race.

"Some of the participants have qualified to enter the national skating race to be held at Patiala. Four students are going to take part in a 24-hour skating event from Tiruchi to Chennai covering 300 km," Mr. Manoharan said.

The race was organised by the Tiruchi district roller-skating sports association and sponsored by Vedham Automobiles.

The winners

The list of winners in various categories are as follows:

In the below 6 years boys category M. Santhosan came first, S. Mohinth second and Y. Murali Mohan third. K. Mirudhubashini won in the girls category. In the between 6 and 8 years boys category A.G. Govindaraj came first, G. Venkatakrishnan second and J. Isaac Jack Roshan third. In the girls category M. Shilpa, Vishnupriya and Rohini for the first place while S. Giri Aishwarya came second.

In the between 8 and 10 years boys category there was a tie between Jagadeesh Chandran, M. Sai Sabareesh and M. Vignesh for the first place while M. Adiyaman came second. There was another tie between R. Siddharth, S. Vignesh and S. Supeshkaran for the third place. In the girls category G. Subashree came first while K. Oormila came second.

In the between 10 and 12 years category there was a tie between Vamsee Krishna, M. Naveen and M. Gowtham for the first place. P. Sathish Kumar came second.

In the between 12 and 14 years boys category there was a tie between M. Viknaraj and B. Karthick for the first place while R. Hareeshwar came second. Shenbagam won in the girls category. In the between 14 and 16 years boys category C. Shiva and S. Bharadwaj came first and second respectively.

In the above 16 years boys category R. Annamalai and Z. Fazul Kareem came first and second, there was a tie between R. Saravanan, V. Pandi and S. Gopalsamy for the third place. Z. Thasina won in the girls category.

There were 50 participants, said Mr. Manoharan.

The prizes were distributed by B. Amirthakasi, president, Tiruchi District Roller Skating Sports Association, and K. Regunath, deputy chief of boilers, Tiruchi.
