Jacob calls for probe into torture killing

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The leader of Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) T.M. Jacob has asked the State Government to have the torture killing at the Fort police station probed by a sitting judge of the High Court.

In a statement here on Sunday, Mr. Jacob said the Congress, which headed the ruling coalition, itself had alleged that there was a conspiracy behind the incident. A judicial probe was, therefore, all the more relevant, he said.

One of the terms of reference for the judicial probe should be whether, as alleged by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, the victim Udayakumar was tortured and killed by certain policemen as part of a political conspiracy to bring the Government to disrepute.

Revenue recovery

Mr. Jacob also urged the Government to ban revenue recovery proceedings against farmers who could not pay back their loans. Faced with recovery proceedings, four farmers had committed suicide in Wayanad district during the last one week. The Government had forgotten its earlier assurance of declaring a moratorium on loans taken by the farmers.
