PONDICHERRY: Chief Minister N Rangasamy on Monday paid homage to R Nalamaharajan (Congress) who died on September 13 after a brief illness. Tabling a condolence resolution in the Assembly, the Chief Minister said Nalamaharajan as chairman of the Pondicherry Housing Board had dedicated himself to uplifting the condition of the poor. Nalamaharajan was elected to the Assembly from Cottuchery constituency in Karaikal consecutively from 1991. Speaker M. D. R. Ramachandran paid tributes to the "bold and fearless approach" of Nalamaharajan to tackling people's problems. Leader of the Opposition R. V. Janakiraman (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) and legislators belonging to the ruling and Opposition parties also paid homage to Nalamaharajan. In response to requests from members, the Chief Minister announced that the Government had taken a policy decision to provide Rs. 10 lakhs to the family of a legislator who dies in office. The Government would also extend a solatium of Rs. 3 lakhs to the family in the event of a former legislator's death.
