PONDICHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Monday denied that the Government had ignored the Karaikal region. At a brief winter session of the Assembly, he said Rs. 8 crores had been sanctioned for improving the Jayaprakash Cooperative Spinning Mills in Karaikal and the Government's efforts to revamp the mill had started showing results. After the December 2004 tsunami, the Government immediately took up relief and rehabilitation works in Karaikal. A sum of Rs. 152 crores allotted to the region from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation showed the Government's concern for Karaikal, he said. On the plea from C. Jayakumar, of the Tamil Maanila Congress, that the Government announce bonus for workers of Swadeshi Cotton Mills and Sri Bharathi Mills, the Chief Minister said he would take a decision soon. The two mills had been under the control of the National Textiles Corporation and were taken over by the Pondicherry Government some months ago. Hence the workers should be assured of bonus for Diwali, contended Jayakumar. The Chief Minister said the Administration had written to the Centre to earmark reservation for Scheduled Tribes residing in Pondicherry. He was responding to a plea made by N. Gangadharan (Congress). The Chief Minister said the Government would take a decision as soon as a reply was received from the Centre.
